Factors affecting
productivity volunteer placements
"Unpaid help done in an organized manner to
parties to whom the worker has no obligations" is how most people think of
volunteers. A person's decision to volunteer should be voluntary rather than compelled.
Volunteers usually operate as part of a formal program with a broad mission
that is broken down into goals, plans, job roles, and responsibilities. They are
not expected to be paid, with the exception of possibly minimal
reimbursements/stipends for travel or living expenses. In 1976 Richard Hackman and Greg Oldham
created a five-job-characteristic model to produce high-quality work and great
personal satisfaction
Skill
variety
Skill variety is the number of skills used to do a
job. A traditional assembly line job would have a low skill variety, whereas a
nurse would have higher skill variety. Task identity refers to the level at
which employees feel like they “owns” the outcome when completing the task.
Task
identity
"Owning" the task and viewing oneself as
critical to the accomplishment; the most "wholesome" state is when a
person completes a task from beginning to end with clear results.
Task
significance
The degree to which employees believe their job has a
major impact on those within or outside the organization is referred to as task
importance.
Autonomy
Working freely and independently; explicit
instructions from superiors and step-by-step manuals might limit this liberty.
Feedback
Obtaining clear and direct feedback on the efficacy of
one's work and performance; the company may expand this to include recognition
and rewards.
Conclusion
These features are expected to influence a person's
sense of personal responsibility for the outcome and the work's perceived
purpose. Others have suggested that work setting factors such as management
styles and peer interaction can influence job success.
